Special Filing Period

Voids in Candidacy in Non-partisan Offices

The regular candidate filing period for offices subject to election in 2003, is July 28, 2003 through August 1, 2003. If at the end of the regular filing period, there are non-partisan offices where no candidates have filed (voids in candidacy), a special three-day filing period will be held August 4, 2003 through August 6, 2003, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day, to reopen those offices to filing. (RCW 29.15.160 - 220)

After the close of filing on August 1, 2003 at 4:30 p.m., a list of offices where voids in candidacy exist will be posted. Once the three-day special filing period begins, the names of candidates who file Declarations of Candidacy will be added and updated twice daily (approximately noon and 5:00 p.m.) at http://www.metrokc.gov/elections/filing.htm.

If at the end of the special filing period there are offices where voids in candidacy still exist, the election for those offices will be deemed "lapsed" and the offices stricken form the ballot. No purported write-ins will be counted and no candidates will be certified as elected. The incumbents will remain in office until successors are elected at the next election when such positions are voted upon.

Major Party Vacancies in Partisan Offices

Candidates who wish to file for partisan offices where major party vacancies exist (one or more of the major parties did not have a candidate file during the regular filing period) must contact their political party. Candidates who wish to file for one of the positions where a partisan vacancy exists must be nominated by their party's county central committee. A letter of nomination from the party must accompany their declaration and filing fee. The last day for major political parties to fill vacancies is August 8, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. (RCW 29.18.150)

Call the Elections Office at (206) 296-1565 if you have questions.
