Officials to retrieve additional ballots

County elections officials late last night confirmed the initial list of misfiled, uncounted ballots was incomplete and missing last names beginning with the letters A, B and a few C names. After further investigation, staff estimates an additional 162 ballots were misfiled and not previously counted.

These ballots are part of the group of 573 ballots misfiled and not included in election results.

"I want to emphasize these ballots have always been secure and in the possession of King County Elections," said Bill Huennekens, superintendent of elections. "These ballots fall into the same category as the initial 573; our initial report was simply incomplete."

Huennekens will present the additional 162 ballots to the King County Canvassing

Board Monday and ask the three-person board to treat the ballots in the same manner as the other misfiled ballots identified Sunday.

"I want to assure voters that we are committed to a thorough review of our processes to ensure the accuracy, fairness, and transparency of the recount," said Dean Logan, director of Records, Elections and Licensing Services. "We are committed to an open and transparent process, and will count every eligible ballot."

Staff this morning will open the locked cage where the ballots are stored at 9:30 a.m. in the presence of party observers to retrieve the misfiled ballots.

The list of voters affected by today's findings will be presented to the canvassing board Monday.
