February special election ballots in the mail next week

Last day for new Washington Voters to register is Monday, January 22

More than 258,000 absentee voters in areas throughout King County will receive absentee ballots in the mail next week for the upcoming Feb. 6 special election. Absentee ballots will be mailed starting Jan. 17.

King County Elections will offer early voting at the downtown Seattle office at 500 Fourth Ave, Room 553 on the accessible voting unit equipment starting Wednesday, Jan. 17, to accommodate all voters, especially those with low or partial vision or any physical disability.

The accessible voting unit offers audio and touch screen ballot options in English and Chinese. With tactile devices, headphones, high-contrast and large-print text options, the machine is easy to use and available to any voter. Registered voters can cast their ballot starting Jan. 17 until Feb. 6, the day of the election, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m

Households in the Preserve Our Plateau Annexation Area and the Seattle School District No. 1 will receive voters’ pamphlets in the mail starting today. For more information, visit http://www.metrokc.gov/elections/200702/measurelist200702.aspx .

Tips for voting at the polls

  • Poll voters are required to show identification. Acceptable forms of identification include a voter registration card, Washington State driver’s license or identification card, a utility bill, or any other form of governmental identification. 

  • Voters who are blind or have limited vision or dexterity issues can vote a secret ballot at any polling place in King County. As a requirement of the Help America Vote Act, accessible voting units assist voters with physical disabilities vote more independently by offering audio and visual technology.

Tips for voting by absentee ballot

  • Follow instructions. Use a dark pen to completely fill in the oval next to your choice. If you make an error in voting, draw an "X" through the error and fill in the correct oval.

  • Do not sign your ballot! Stray marks on your ballot may require election workers to duplicate your ballot for your vote to count.

  • Sign your return envelope and, use the secrecy flap to protect your signature.  Make sure to have your ballot postmarked on or before Feb. 6.
