PROSECUTING ATTORNEY

Note to Voters: The statements below are written by the candidates, who are solely responsible for the contents therein.

List of Candidates for King County Prosecuting Attorney:

Norm MALENG (Republican)
As a boy growing up on a dairy farm in rural Whatcom County, I learned the values of integrity, hard work, and community responsibility. They are values that have guided me throughout my life. They continue to be the underlying principles in my work as King County Prosecuting Attorney.

As Prosecutor, I have always believed that the criminal justice system should be just that¾a fair process that holds offenders accountable¾and not a revolving door for career criminals. I have worked to improve our sentencing laws for violent criminals, including "Three Strikes You're Out," "Hard Time for Armed Crime," and adult trials for juveniles who commit murder.

I am working to make King County the safest place in the nation to live, work and raise your family. I believe that our children should feel safe in their neighborhoods, parks and schools. That's why we have taken a tough approach to drug dealers and gangs. We have prosecuted them aggressively and kept them away from our kids and our communities.

That is also why I led the effort to pass the Community Protection Act, which gave us longer sentences for sex offenders, notification to neighborhoods when they are released, registration with the sheriff, and civil commitment of sexually violent predators.

Our streets and neighborhoods are safer today:

  • the arrests of juveniles for violent crimes has hit a 15-year low;
  • the murder rate in King County has dropped; and
  • the overall crime rate is down.
I am proud to have received the early endorsement of, among others, the Seattle Fire Fighter's Union, the Joint Council of Teamsters No. 28, the King County Labor Council, and the King County Corrections Guild.

I would like to continue working for you, the citizens of King County. I ask for your vote. Thank you.

Fred CANAVOR (Democrat)
20 years in office is long enough!

King County's Prosecuting Attorney has been there for two decades. It's time for a change.

We need better co-operation between the Prosecutor's office and our local law enforcement agencies to curb crime.

I'll work more closely with our communities and their law enforcement agencies to make our neighborhoods safer and fairer places to live.

We must strengthen our juvenile justice system.

I'll work to stop the revolving door for youth crime by emphasizing crime prevention and developing programs that instill hope and prospects for success to youthful offenders.

We must stop paying millions to settle frivolous claims brought against King County and its employees.

As the lawyer for our County the incumbent has needlessly given away tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars for even frivolous lawsuits. This must stop!

Land use and property issues must be moved from the shadows of government so disputes are resolved fairly in the interests of the citizens of our county.

I have the experience, the ability and the desire to bring the change our County needs and deserves.

I was twice elected Prosecuting Attorney for San Juan County. I served there through 1994. I served on the Board of the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys where I dealt with issues affecting prosecutors throughout the state - including King County's incumbent prosecutor.

I know where the problems are in the King County Prosecutor's office. And I know how to fix them.

I am licensed to practice in Washington State and before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Since 1995 I have been with the Seattle firm of Appel & Glueck.

Your vote for Fred Canavor will ensure that King County will work to reduce juvenile crime, provide proper land use protection and eliminate spending tax dollars settling frivolous law suits.

IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE!

King County deserves better than a 20 year career politician who appears more interested in seeking higher office and political grandstanding, than in effectively managing the Prosecuting Attorney's office.

Please consider the following:

1. Stadium Boondoggle: Maleng railroaded the $414 million baseball stadium (rejected by the voters) through the court system, but failed to protect King County's legal rights under the Mariners lease. King County taxpayers could face over $80 million in cost overruns, while the Mariners organization has yet to contribute a penny of the $45 million originally promised.

2. Dishonest Prosecution: Maleng told the U.S. Supreme Court it was acceptable for his deputy prosecutors to lie under oath. Every single justice rejected Maleng's position. As a result, taxpayers were forced to pay the wrongly accused man $162,500.

3. Racial Discrimination: Two-thirds of defendants prosecuted by Maleng under "three strikes" are African-Americans, even though only five percent of King County's population is Black. Criminal laws must be enforced fairly and equally, not used to single out minorities for life sentences.

RICHARD POPE will work for the people of King County, instead of promoting corporate welfare and serving entrenched special interests.

RICHARD POPE will fairly and vigorously enforce laws to protect the people and work to reduce the crime rate. He will ensure tax dollars are not wasted (or lives ruined) through malicious prosecution of innocent persons.

RICHARD POPE graduated from the University of Washington Law School with Highest Honors and has devoted his entire career to representing ordinary citizens. He has extensive experience in criminal justice, civil litigation, and family law. He will make an excellent Prosecuting Attorney.

JOIN DEMOCRATS, REPUBLICANS AND INDEPENDENTS WHO ARE TIRED OF "POLITICS AS USUAL" AND WANT REAL CHANGE IN KING COUNTY. PLEASE VOTE RICHARD POPE FOR PROSECUTING ATTORNEY.
