District courts are the "People's Courts," handling civil disputes up to $35,000; small claims; misdemeanor crimes; and infractions. Judges issue orders for protection and anti-harassment. Judge Douglas J. Smith has demonstrated the experience and professional expertise necessary in these sensitive cases.
Judge Smith was elected to the bench in 1990, receiving an "Exceptionally Well-Qualified" rating. He was a Shoreline Court prosecutor in 1974, and judge pro tem from 1985 to 1990. Judge Smith was appointed to four year terms as Lake Forest Park Municipal Judge in 1989, 1993, and 1997.
Judge Smith received the seventh highest overall performance rating, among twenty-six district court judges in the latest attorney poll. He was the only judicial member of the Regional Domestic Violence Training Manual Committee; and has served as mock trial judge for U.W. and Seattle University law schools; and made the court available to teachers throughout the district.
Judge Smith is a firm believer in public service, serving on the boards of Shoreline YMCA; Lake Forest Park Rotary; coaching baseball, basketball, and soccer.
Judge Smith and his wife, Judy have been married twenty-nine years; have four sons, two daughters-in-law, and a grandson.
