Spreading the Word

The E-911 public education program focuses on educating the public on the appropriate use of 911. This program has proven to be effective in reducing the overall number of 911 calls over the years and in reducing the number of inappropriate 911 calls. The public is encouraged to call 911 when they need an emergency response from police, fire, or emergency medical personnel. If non-emergency assistance that is not time critical is needed, or if information is needed, the non-emergency, or business, numbers of the police and fire departments or other government services should be called. The non-emergency telephone numbers of the police and fire departments are printed on the front inside cover of many of the telephone directories, and are also available along with other government listings in the blue pages of the directories. The E-911 Program Office produces a variety of public education materials which help to make the non-emergency telephone numbers more accessible. These include brochures, telephone stickers, and refrigerator magnets. In addition, brochures are also available for senior citizens and in Spanish. A variety of public education materials are available to teach children about 911. These include: a coloring book for pre-schoolers through 1st graders; an activity book for 2nd through 6th graders; stickers; and 911 showbags. All of these public education materials are available free of charge in King County from any police or fire department. These may also be obtained through the E-911 Program Office.
