More About Long-Term Disability Insurance
If you're any employee except a part-time Local 587 employee in the Partial Benefits Plan or a deputy sheriff (this insurance is not available for deputy sheriffs), you automatically receive county-paid basic long-term disability (LTD) insurance. If you become disabled, unable to work and apply for it, this benefit combines with other sources of disability income to replace 60% of your monthly predisability earnings after a 180-day waiting period. The maximum benefit is $6,000 a month.
If you're a part-time Local 587 employee in the Partial Benefits Plan, you receive county-paid basic LTD insurance for yourself, provided you have elected medical coverage (you pay part of the cost of your medical coverage).
If you receive county-paid basic LTD insurance, you may purchase enhanced LTD when you are first eligible. If you decline it then or drop coverage later (you may drop coverage any time), you may not add it again.
Enhanced LTD, like basic LTD, combines with other sources of disability income to replace 60% of your predisability earnings, but reduces your waiting period from 180 to 90 days and increases the maximum benefit from $6,000 to $7,200 a month.
When you leave county employment, you may convert your county coverage to an individual policy. For more information and to apply, contact the plan (CIGNA) within 31 days of when your county coverage ends click "Contact" under "Links to Help" at the top of the page. Click below for the:
