Eat Smart King County, Move More

success storiesMove More Program – Success Stories

We want to hear from you!

Think you’re alone trying to learn how to incorporate physical activity every day? Guess what – thousands of King County employees are working with you to find effective and rewarding ways to improve or maintain their health. Read their stories here.

"For the last thirty years or so, I’ve exercised fairly regularly. For most of that time, I would run three to four times a week, never less than three miles on each occasion. It’s probably the reason that, at age sixty-three, I can still play three sets of singles tennis and remain standing long enough to shake my opponent’s hand, win or lose. However, in the last few years, the regularity of my exercise had begun to diminish somewhat. In addition, my blood pressure was sneaking up a bit and I was not really happy with myself. For these reasons, the County’s Health Incentives came along at a good time. Since the beginning of February, I’ve managed to stay with a daily exercise program, lose about ten pounds and see my blood pressure return to 115 over 75.

The program that works best for me is the daily exercise entitled, “Get Fit on Route 66”. In addition, it’s truly nostalgic. My family moved to Seattle in 1954 from a little town near Pittsburg, PA. We actually came in a 1954 Ford (the car that I chose in my program) by way of Route 66. We connected with Route 66 somewhere in Missouri and remained on it until we headed north at Needles, California. Route 66 was a two lane hi-way that went through every little town and city along the way, a whole lot different than the interstate highways of today. That was quite an exciting trip for an 11 year old who had never been more than 300 miles from home.

I’ve thought for a long time that “healthcare” in a misnomer. As that term is generally used, it refers to medical care. True healthcare is self-care which is exactly what the County is asking us to do. We’re all getting older so we shouldn’t be fooled by anti-aging propaganda; there’s only one way to stop aging and I’m not ready for that, yet! Healthy aging is the key and credible medical science indicates it’s most assured through weight control, good nutrition and exercise. I appreciate the County’s attempt to reduce the escalating medical care costs. It’s being done in such a way that each of us can make choices about our health, both physical and mental and, while doing so, save some money. "
