Historic Street Signs

Historic Street Signs

Enhance historic character of communities in unincorporated King County through development and placement of historic street signs.

________________________________________

When the County adopted a numbered grid system of street designation for more efficient delivery of emergency services - particularly in rural areas - a part of the historical character of the county's communities was lost.  Often street names reflected the origins of the community. There is interest in some communities in restoring the historic names. The historic street name project created a two-part sign template that retains the numbered street sign in green above the historic street in brown below.

In a partnership with the King County Road Services Division, the Historic Preservation Program researched and recommended a template for the new signs.

In 2003, in cooperation with community members, County staff verified 30 historic street names/signs for the community of Fall City.  The King County Road Services Division installed the signs.

Plans are underway to identify additional communities for sign installation in the coming year.
