Promote tourism opportunities to strengthen the overall economic base of the region.
________________________________________
The tourism industry is a major part of the economy in this region. It is ranked as the fourth largest industry in the state. The Seattle-King County region has been rated as one of the top tourism draws in the country by many newspapers, journals and professional associations.
Historic sites and resources including buildings, landscapes, districts, scenic corridors and museums are primary as the most visited attractions. BRED plays an important role in maintaining and enhancing the tourism infrastructure through designation and preservation of historic properties and production of interpretive materials such as signs, maps, and brochures.
BRED is working with the King County Roads Services Division to develop a Heritage Corridor program that will designate and enhance significant scenic and historic roadways in the County by the end of 2005.
Additionally, one of the County's partner agencies, 4Culture will identify one or two cultural heritage corridors for marketing by the end of 2005. The Rural Strategy, due for completion in November, 2005 will have a tourism component. BRED staff is working with King County Airport staff to identify and implement tourism activities, such as winery tours, from that facility by mid-2006.
