Historic residential, commercial and civic buildings will be documented through this island-wide survey and inventory project.

Historic resources on Vashon-Maury Island include pioneer-era cabins, sites of nineteenth century Chautauqua Meetings, early twentieth century resorts, and even commercial buildings from the post-World War II era. During 2004, Historic Preservation Program staff will work to update the County's Historic Resource Inventory (HRI), to revise listings for previously documented Island properties, and to add dozens of new entries.
The Historic Resource Inventory is a database of over 1,000 historic properties located in unincorporated King County and the cities with which the County has interlocal agreements for preservation services. Inventory listings typically include physical descriptions of buildings that are at least forty years old, as well as statements about the historical significance of properties, and information about architects, builders, ownership histories, and location information.
Vashon and Maury Island 's historic sites were originally surveyed in the late 1970s, and approximately 100 properties were added to the County's HRI at that time. The project currently underway has increased the number of inventoried properties to over 200. A portion of the newly inventoried properties date to the era between the 1930s and the early 1960s, and so have only achieved historic status in recent years. Others are older properties that were missed in earlier surveys.
Work on this project has been partially funded by the Washington State Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.
