Landmark Registers and Historic Resource Inventories

Landmark Registers

The technical terminology used to categorize and discuss landmarks and historic and cultural places can sometimes be confusing so we have compiled information on the different landmark registers and inventories of historic resources. We have also compiled contact information for the various government agencies involved in historic preservation activities in King County .

Historic Resource Surveys and Inventories

Government agencies at all levels conduct historic resource "surveys", which involve research and the creation of a record documenting historic resources in their jurisdictions. Historic resources may be buildings, sites, structures, objects, landscapes, or even districts containing a concentration of resources. The result is an Historic Resource Inventory, which may take the form of an electronic data base, archival paper and film files, or publications. Inventories help to document local history and provide background information used to evaluate properties that may be eligible for landmark designation.

King County Historic Resource Inventory

Since 1977, the Historic Preservation Program has conducted an ongoing survey of historic resources resulting in an inventory of over 1300 properties. The inventory is a valuable information source for property owners, historians, realtors, students, planners, and others wishing to learn more about specific places in the county. Contact Charlie Sundberg at 206-296-7409 or charlie.sundberg@kingcounty.gov for more information.

Other Historic Resource Inventories

Federal agencies, the State, and a number of cities around the county also maintain Historic Resource Inventories. Historic Seattle Preservation and Development authority has published a series of 16 maps which provide an introduction to neighborhood resources and building types in Seattle . Altogether, it is estimated that more than 4,000 properties have been inventoried around King County .

Washington State Archaeological Site Inventory

The Washington State Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation maintains records of significant historic and prehistoric sites that have been listed on the Washington State Archaeological Site Inventory. Site forms are exempt from public disclosure under State law to prevent vandalism and looting. Information about discoveries of new sites may be reported to the Washington State Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) at P.O. Box 48343 , Olympia , WA 98504-8343 / 360-407-0752. http://www.oahp.wa.gov/
