Tri-County ESA response effort

Local salmon conservation plans are being developed in these six major watershedsKing, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties have brought together a diverse group of representatives in an effort to recover salmon and healthy watersheds while maintaining our vibrant economy. Local leaders have presented the federal government with a recovery plan for the Puget Sound Area that maintains local control while meeting requirements of the ESA. The National Marine Fisheries Service will seek public comment on this plan and expects to include it in the final rule before it becomes effective on January 8, 2001.

Also, local planning is happening within the 6 major watersheds in the Tri-County area. These long-term watershed-based salmon conservation plans will consider the whole watershed, from the upper headwaters to the Puget Sound shorelines, and address all species of wild salmon and trout. These plans will be developed over the next two to five years, and there will be many opportunities for you to get involved. Look for public meetings and workshops where different salmon recovery options will be discussed and evaluated. (11 of 15)
