Hatcheries

A hatchery worker with spawning salmon Although the initial purpose of hatcheries was to lessen human impacts to salmon populations, long term effects which were not fully considered resulted in a decline of wild, native salmon populations. Hatchery fish compete with native fish for food. Also, hatchery fish are genetically weaker than wild fish. Therefore, interbreeding results in a lower survival rate for wild fish over the long term. However, hatchery managers are working to improve their operations and be part of the solution. (8 of 15)
