Sims honors local Earth Heroes

As part of his Earth Legacy 2000 Initiative, King County Executive Ron Sims recognized Jim and Nancy Roberts of Kirkland and Seattle Goodwill as King County's Earth Heroes for the month of June. In a special ceremony held today, Sims honored these heroes for their dedication to protecting the natural environment.

Launched in May of this year, the King County Earth Legacy Initiative celebrates the importance of protecting and enhancing our natural environment. The Initiative outlines a number of innovative programs that are working hard to maintain the rich integrity of our region, as well as our high quality of life. It actively engages the involvement of businesses, local government, organizations, youth, employees, and the broader community to make a difference.

"Seattle Goodwill and Jim and Nancy Roberts are well deserving of this honor," said King County Executive Ron Sims. "They are outstanding examples of environmental stewards in our region who work tirelessly to maintain the beauty and integrity of this area."

Although Seattle Goodwill's attention to the environment was not fully realized until it tracked its business practices, they have always maintained an excellent track record. For years, this organization has collected a variety of materials for reuse. The proceeds from these sales are used for education and job training programs.

Seattle Goodwill has successfully collaborated with King County Solid Waste on a number of projects. These include a reusable collection project at the Shoreline transfer station where more than 22 tons of furniture, clothes and other items have been redirected from being dumped, a computer recovery project where disabled computers are safely handled and discarded, and other special recycling events.

Jim and Nancy Roberts are familiar faces on the beaches of King County. For the past two years, they have committed themselves to working with the Beach Naturalist Program. The purpose of the program is to educate beach visitors about the unique plants and animals that inhabit the shore, and encourage the public to help protect and enjoy this fragile ecosystem.

In addition, the Roberts have selflessly given their time and skills to the Nature Conservancy, U.S. Forest Service, Audubon Society and other environmental organizations. From educating visitors on the sensitive areas in our ecosystem to participating in bird surveys around the County, the Roberts truly embody the real meaning of stewardship to our natural environment, to our communities, and to our future generations.

"Honoring quiet, unsung heroes is part of this legacy," said Sims. "Jim and Nancy Roberts and Seattle Goodwill are shining examples of an Earth Hero. It is important that we share their stories with our children-showing that everyone can make a difference in protecting our air, land and water."

Earth Hero nominations are submitted monthly by King County employees. Individuals and businesses in King County which are working to make a positive impact on our environment are selected monthly for their outstanding contributions to this region.
