| March 5, 2001 12:30 p.m. Temporary media relations contact for King County Airport; update on Airport runways During the current earthquake-related repairs to the runway at King County International Airport, please direct all news media inquiries and requests for interviews to media relations specialist Frank Abe. You can reach Frank at his King County DOT office at (206) 684-1880 or via pager at (206) 993-3358. He is available for questions or interviews anytime. However, due to the needs of airport staff to focus on the job of repairs and federal safety requirements, on-site tours must be arranged in advance. When developments warrant, we will make every effort to schedule media tours on the runway. At the present time, the short runway was reopened Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. Contrary to some news reports this morning, less than half of the long runway is open for takeoff and landings for planes under 35,000 pounds. Work has proceeded throughout the weekend to analyze and plan for repair of the damage to the long runway. At this time, about 4700 feet at the south end of the long runway is operational; the actual operating length varies at times to allow crews to conduct further tests on the runway. The Airport estimates it will take 3 weeks to complete repairs on and reopen 6000 more feet in the center of the long runway. There is no estimate yet for reopening the last 4000 feet on the north end of the long runway.
