King County reports damage estimate to state; initial assessments top $173 million

King County Executive Ron Sims today announced he will report initial estimates of more than $173 million in damages to King County, the cities and towns, fire districts, water, sewer and school districts within the County from last week's earthquake. The numbers will be reported to the state and collected with other counties and given to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for review and financial assessment.

"Countywide, while we all faired relatively well from the February 28th 6.8 magnitude earthquake, facilities around King County did sustain significant damage," said Sims. "The facilities that will require substantial rebuilding include the King County International Airport (Boeing Field) and the Port of Seattle's port and Sea-Tac International Airport. The County Courthouse will also need repair work."

Under the FEMA program, jurisdictions report an initial assessment to the state today and the state presents a complete assessment to FEMA. Then FEMA crews join the local jurisdiction staffs to assess local damage and arrive at a final damage estimate upon which recovery reimbursement recommendations are made. Many of the costs are for structural repair to facilities as well as overtime hours and labor.

Sims said initial estimates for County facilities include $40 million from King County government related activities, $48 million from the County's cities and towns, $96,000 from fire districts; $1.3 million from water and sewer districts; $11.5 million from school districts; $72 million from other entities such as the Port of Seattle for a total of $173,639,502. Other agencies, such as the Public Facilities District, retirement centers and health centers are also included. Included in the initial assessments are damages reported by the following agencies:

Port of Seattle/seaport $39 million
Port of Seattle/airport $32 million
King County $38 million
City of Seattle $38 million
King County International Airport (Boeing Field) $23 million
King County facilities (several buildings) $10 million
City of Burien $3 million
City of Bellevue $1.4 million
King County Department of Natural Resources $3.3 million
King County transit facilities $1 million
Highline School District $10 million
Kent School District $1 million
City of Snoqualmie $1 million

Individuals and small businesses who have damages may qualify for grant programs or low-interest loans. Please call FEMA, at 1-800-462-9029 to report damages.
