King County Drug Diversion Court graduation celebrates program's 7th anniversary
Judge Michael J. Trickey, King County Drug Diversion Court Judge, will preside over the 50th graduation ceremony marking the program's 7th anniversary.
The graduation will take place:
Friday, Dec. 7, 2001
9:00 a.m. to 10:30 am
King County Superior Court Presiding Courtroom, E942
Eighteen drug court participants will graduate and approximately 35 of the 450 prior drug court graduates will be in attendance. Mayor-elect Greg Nickels will speak to the graduates and King County Executive Ron Sims will deliver the keynote address. King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng, King County Sheriff Dave Reichert, several Seattle Police Department officials and community leaders will also be in attendance.
The King County Drug Diversion Court Program supports substance-abusing offenders in breaking the cycle of addiction and the crimes that accompany it by combining effective treatment and intensive judicial supervision. It is a pre-adjudication program that provides eligible defendants the opportunity to receive drug treatment in lieu of incarceration. Eligible defendants can elect to participate in the program or proceed with traditional court processing. After choosing to participate in the program, defendants come under the court's supervision and are required to attend treatment sessions, undergo random urinalysis, and appear before the Drug Court judge on a regular basis.
If the defendants meet the requirements of each of the three levels of Drug Court, they graduate from the program and the charges are dismissed. If Drug Court defendants fail to make progress, they are terminated from the program and sentenced on their original charge.
