World Diabetes Day brings together community to raise awareness, provide steps for personal action

Tomorrow, Executive Ron Sims will join with community leaders and health care providers to raise awareness about the issue of diabetes in our community and outline prevention and management steps that people can take to benefit their health. Executive Sims will also issue a proclamation declaring November 14th as World Diabetes Day in King County.

Partners in attendance to support diabetes awareness, management and prevention efforts will include: Jeanette Wood, former State Senator and a diabetic, the American Diabetes Association, REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health) coalition members and the Optometric Physicians of Washington.

The press conference will be held:

Thursday, November 14, 2002
from 11:30 - noon
King County Administration Building
500 4th Avenue
on the 2nd Floor in the Lydia/Catherine Room

The press conference will:

  • Provide current statistics on diabetes prevalence in King County.
  • Provide individual stories from diabetics on how they have managed their disease
  • Outline work being done to address diabetes in our community
  • Give news media an opportunity to observe an A1C test being conducted, which is the most important metric for determining if a person's diabetes is under control
  • Provide media access to community partners for diverse perspectives on the disease
  • Emphasize the importance of diabetes prevention
