Site adjacent to Fire Training Academy added to list for Secure Community Transition Facility
Executive Sims' statement regarding the additional listing of State Department of Natural Resources property adjacent to the State Fire Training Academy as a possible site for a Secure Community Transition Facility.
Today, the State Department of Social and Health Services identified property owned by the State Department of Natural Resources located adjacent to the State Fire Training Academy as a possible site for a Secure Community Transition Facility (SCTF). I am pleased that this site will now be thoroughly evaluated as a potential location for the SCTF in King County.
I have stated all along that a SCTF should not be located in a rural or urban residential area or within a fifteen-minute walk of a residential neighborhood. This particular site is not near population centers, schools, or daycares yet it is easily within an hour of all necessary services. Further, we do not believe that a slight expansion of the footprint of the Fire Training Academy will negatively impact forest or recreation opportunities in the area.
King County, including the King County Sheriff, has made a commitment to meet DSHS required law enforcement response time and police protection for this site if it is selected by DSHS.
It is ultimately the state's responsibility to site and operate the facility. The state will hold a series of public meetings, in accordance with state law, to listen to public concerns and to review all aspects of the site.
