EPA grant funds awarded to assess contaminated sites

King County Executive Ron Sims today announced that King County will receive a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for assessing environmentally contaminated sites. The funds will be used for a variety of projects, including assessment of a commercial block in downtown Auburn intended for economic development, and a former shooting range in rural King County that the County wishes to purchase for open space.

"King County is extremely grateful for these EPA grants," said Sims. "The funding is an important part of the ongoing joint King County/City of Seattle Brownfields Program, and will allow us to continue to assist local businesses, nonprofits and municipalities assess, cleanup and redevelop contaminated sites in our community."

In addition, King County is part of a coalition led by the State of Washington Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED) that will receive $3,000,000 in EPA grant funds to capitalize a revolving loan fund for brownfield cleanup projects. The funds are being awarded to CTED on behalf of a coalition that includes CTED, King County and the cities of Spokane and Tacoma.

Brownfields are abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial or commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. King County and the City of Seattle have established the King County/Seattle Brownfields Program to clean up industrial land, create more jobs and protect the natural environment. The Brownfields Program offers assistance to small business and property owners interested in assessing, cleaning up and redeveloping environmentally contaminated land, known as brownfields.
