Executive names nominee for Superintendent of Elections
King County Executive Ron Sims and Director of Records, Elections and Licensing Services Dean Logan announced today the selection of Bill Huennekens as the county's new Superintendent of Elections. Huennekens assumes the position on November 3.
Like Logan, who was named Director of the Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division in September, Huennekens comes to King County from the state elections division in the Secretary of State's office where he served as the Elections Policy Analyst and Rules Coordinator for the past four years. Prior to that, he was Superintendent of Elections in Mason County.
"Bill's background in election policy and his experience observing and advising on election processes across the state, makes him an ideal candidate for this important position," Sims stated in the announcement. "He's a recognized leader in the elections field and his appointment represents another 'win' for King County."
In particular, Huennekens has been a key player in implementing new federal election reform legislation, advising counties on the intricacies of day-to-day election management, and implementing alternative language requirements under the Voting Rights Act. "He has the right skill mix to dig in and do the detailed work we need done in King County," added Logan.
Huennekens holds a Masters Degree in political science from Western Washington University where he also earned his undergraduate degree. In addition to his elections experience, he has taught government, sociology and speech in the state's community college system for the past eight years. He previously served as an intern in the Washington State Senate.
As the largest jurisdiction in the state with the highest volume of absentee ballots in the country, King County has faced a series of challenges in the elections arena over the past year. Executive Sims has committed to making voter trust and confidence a top priority for his administration heading into the 2004 election cycle.
"We are fortunate to have been able to recruit strong and seasoned professionals in Dean Logan and Bill Huennekens," Sims said. "Their combined leadership and experience will carry us forward, for years to come, as a model elections organization."
