King County to halt local license fee collections

King County Executive Ron Sims today announced that as of Monday, Nov. 17, the County will no longer be collecting the $15 local license fee when motorists pay their fees at King County licensing locations.

Sims made the announcement following a legal review by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office of the Washington Supreme Court decision that upheld Initiative 776, which repealed the vehicle license fees.

King County will lose about $5 million per year, and its cities another $13 million from the loss of this revenue. These funds have been used for road construction and improvement projects. As a result, major projects like those on Coal Creek Parkway, the Benson-Carr Intersection and Novelty Hill Road will be significantly delayed. Over the next six years, the loss to King County and cities will be about $100 million.

“However, the Supreme Court action was very clear on county revenue collections and, as always, we will uphold the law,” Sims said.

The state has been holding the vehicle license fees since passage of Initiative 776 and holding it for vehicle owners during the legal discussions. Sims said that when the state makes a determination regarding how rebates on those vehicle license fees will be made, King County will cooperate fully.
