King County buys from private vendors a wide variety of goods and services to support ongoing operations. Through its purchasing practices, the County can modify government's own behavior, business practices and operational activities to support green purchasing. Last year, King County saved $550,000 through its Environmental Purchasing Program.

"I am pleased that King County has been recognized with this honor and I applaud the hard work of our staff who have made this program a success," said Executive Sims. "It is important for public agencies like King County to set an example for the rest of the community. Not only are we saving natural resources, we are making smart choices for our community, economy and the environment.”
