King County, Seattle receive $16.9 million homeless assistance award

Jointly released with the Mayor of the City of Seattle

King County and the City of Seattle have been awarded $16,995,421 in federal McKinney Homeless Assistance funds for housing programs and support services for homeless people. The award was announced today by King County Executive Ron Sims and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels.

"This award helps to sustain critically needed services and supports that help vulnerable individuals and families access safe and stable housing," said Executive Sims. "We are very grateful for the continued support of the federal government for our regional efforts to reduce homelessness and poverty in our local communities."

"We need to end homelessness rather than just manage it, and these funds will help us work toward that goal," said Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. "We'll invest a good portion of this federal money in local programs that move homeless people from the streets to housing, including those suffering from mental illness."

Community-based organizations worked with King County and the City of Seattle to submit a joint application for renewal funding of 58 homeless programs, the Safe Harbors Homeless Management Information System, and funding for new projects. The $16.9M McKinney grant will provide much needed funding to help the region sustain its infrastructure of homeless programs, leveraging an additional $32.5 million in other funding resources. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the awards today as part of the $1.27 billion awarded nationwide.

Newly funded with this award are a permanent housing project that will provide assistance to people with mental illness and an expansion of the Safe Harbors Homeless Management Information System. The new homeless mentally ill project will provide 75 units of supportive housing for chronically homeless men and women.

The majority of the award will sustain existing programs, with approximately $16 million supporting the ongoing operations of 59 programs. These programs provide 718 units of transitional housing, 465 units of permanent housing for homeless people with disabilities, two Safe Haven projects, a variety of supportive services programs and the Safe Harbors Homeless Management Information System. In addition, the new housing project totaling $787,080 will add 75 new permanent housing units for homeless people with mental illness.

The programs funded target nearly every segment of the homeless population: families with children, single parents, single people, youth and young adults, women and children who are victims of domestic violence, persons with mental illness and persons with disabilities.
