Employee news: King County Health Survey

Dear King County Employees,

King County strives to offer employees and their families quality health care coverage at an affordable cost. To date, our initiatives in this area have been focused externally through the Health Advisory Task Force (HATF), a group that I organized late last year to make recommendations on health care cost and quality in the Puget Sound area.

Now, it is time to turn our attention to you and your families and ask your help in addressing the health care challenges. As a starting point, the county and the Joint Labor Management Insurance Committee will conduct a survey of all employees in the regular benefits plans April 19 - May 14, followed by focus groups among a small cross section of employees in late May. To ensure confidentiality for all participants the survey is being conducted by an outside firm.

If you are a King County Police Officers Guild (KCPOG) member, a printed version of the survey specifically tailored for your benefits package will be sent to your workplace the week of April 26, 2004. You may have heard about an online version of the survey. Since this online survey does not include deputy sheriff specific information, we ask that you fill out the printed KCPOG version that will be sent to your workplace.

If you are a KCPOG member and have not received the survey by Friday, April 30, 2004, you can request a copy of it and/or a postage-paid return envelope, by calling 206-684-1122 and providing your name, phone number and either mail stop or address. You may also request a copy from your union representative.

This is an invitation to complete an important survey on health care. The research will enable us to learn more about your views, how you receive health care information, what tools and resources you would use, and your current and preferred sources of health care information, etc. Using the survey results, and results we receive from focus groups that will be conducted in May, the county and union leadership will be better equipped to develop educational materials and health decision tools to support you and your family.

Visit www.metrokc.gov/exec/news/2004/041304.htm, where you will find the memo from me that was e-mailed to you at work and mailed to your homes on April 13, 2004. This provides more detail on this research effort and the action we are taking to address our health care cost increases.

We need your help in this important effort. The online survey is now available. Instructions to complete the online survey are as follows:

Step 1: Please click on this link and complete the survey by May 14. You may fill out the survey at work during regular work hours or complete it at home with your family from your home computer or any computer with Web access. Simply copy the address into the Web browser.

Step 2: Log in using your (employee’s) last name and last four digits of your (employee’s) Social Security number (no spaces). Example: Mary Smith with this Social Security number: 123-45-6789 would enter: smith6789.

Step 3: Enter the password: kingcounty (no spaces).

Step 4: Click the Login button and enter the survey.

Step 5: Click the “Save/Continue” and “Back” links to move throughout the survey and click “Submit Completed Response” to complete the process.

If you need technical assistance, please call 1-888-818-5282.

As you talk to other county employees who might not know about the survey yet, feel free to share this link with them. It is important to hear from everyone.

Employees without computer access may request a paper copy of the survey and/or a postage-paid return envelope, by calling 206-684-1122 and providing their name, phone number and either mail stop or address. Represented employees may also request a copy from your union representative. While it is more cost-effective for the county if employees complete the survey online, it will be important to hear from as many employees as possible and we will gladly accept paper copies.

Thanks for taking the time to complete this survey. Your thoughts and opinions are the key to helping us provide information and tools that really work.

Sincerely,

Ron Sims
King County Executive
