Sims applauds work of
Citizens’ Election Oversight Committee
King County Executive Ron Sims applauded the dedication and work of the King County Citizens’ Election Oversight Committee, which issued its report and recommendations to the Metropolitan King County Council today. The 13-member County Council-appointed citizens’ committee was established in June 2003 to review elections operations and management, to monitor the 2003 election cycle, and to report on their findings.
“I am extremely grateful to the members of the Citizens’ Election Oversight Committee for their commitment and effort to provide oversight for our election process,” said Sims. “I believe the report and recommendations are objective and constructive. They will help us build public confidence in the integrity of our electoral process. Few things are more important than that.”
The detailed committee report recognizes a series of enhancements and improvements implemented in the King County Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division following a 2002 election review conducted by the Secretary of State and an evaluation of division practices by a council consultant in early 2003.
Over the last year, Sims has appointed Dean Logan as the new director for the Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division that oversees elections and Bill Huennekens as superintendent of elections, both of whom have been approved by the County Council. In addition, more than $1.1 million has been invested in system upgrades, process improvements, security enhancements, additional equipment and staff, and the purchase of a new voter registration system to further enhance elections.
The committee offered a series of recommendations encouraging continued improvements and efficiencies in the management and operations of county elections. Among the recommendations were fairly strong statements in support of sustaining adequate funding to properly administer elections, and support for the existing administrative structure where elections are overseen by an appointed manager with proven elections expertise and sound management skill.
“The committee structured its recommendations in a way that will allow us to incorporate their feedback and observations into our work plans,” said Dean Logan, Director of Records, Elections and Licensing Services for the county. “They examined virtually every aspect of our elections process and the result is very, very valuable. In many instances, implementation of committee recommendations has already begun.”
