Executive Sims' statement on provisional ballot counts
King County Executive Ron Sims today issued the following statement regarding requests for lists of provisional voters:
"The most sacred right and responsibility individuals have in this country is the right to have their voice counted at the ballot box. As an individual, as an elected official, and as a candidate, I hold this right as sacrosanct.
"The federal Help America Vote Act following the 2000 presidential election upholds and clarifies that right. I am totally confident that throughout the entire primary and general election process, our elections office has been in compliance with these laws, and will continue to comply.
"I would also like to reiterate - yet again - the total confidence I have in Dean Logan and our entire elections staff. They have handled an unprecedented number of absentee ballots, registrations and processing during this election, and have done so in the most professional manner possible.
"As an elected official, a Democrat, and a candidate this year, I have been consistent in allowing Dean to run the elections office autonomously, so as to ensure every appearance of fairness and to demonstrate that no politics were injected into the elections process. We must all allow the professionals to do their job.
"I am confident that as verification and processing are completed and the election is certified, it will be shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that King County's voters' ballots will all have been counted accurately."
