Courthouse Seismic Project wins award for distinguished project of the year

King County Executive Ron Sims announced that the Courthouse Seismic Project has received two awards from the Northwest Construction Consumer Council (NWCCC) and one award from NW Construction Magazine.

The King County Courthouse Seismic Project has been selected by the NWCCC as the “Best Project Over $10 Million Dollars” for meeting project challenges, goals and objectives; project uniqueness for the seismic aspect of the project; achieving the project schedule and completing the project within cost. The project has also been awarded the Lineas Safety Award for the excellent safety record during the course of construction.

The NW Construction Magazine awarded the Seismic Project Team “Best of 2004 for a Renovation Project”. The team includes: the King County Facilities Division, The Seneca Real Estate Group, Development Manager; Skanska USA Building, Inc., General Contractor; and Coughlin Porter Lundeen, Structural Engineer.

The $86 million seismic project was completed in 22 months as scheduled and on budget. The seismic retrofit was accomplished through use of a passive damping system that will dissipate the energy of an earthquake by acting like a shock absorber.

In addition to the seismic strengthening of the structure, fire alarm and sprinkler systems have been installed on all floors as well as an upgraded heating and air conditioning system. All of this work was accomplished while the building remained occupied. The Courthouse Seismic Project was part of a conglomeration of projects in the courthouse totaling $105 million.

The King County Courthouse is a historic concrete frame building constructed in 1914 with six original stories. A 1929 addition brought the building to its current height of approximately 215 feet and created six more stories of courtroom and office space.
