Sims applauds adoption of 'stable' budget; Commends County Council for responsible actions

King County Executive Ron Sims today thanked the County Council for adoption of his proposed 2005 $3.4 billion budget, and said that together, they have crafted a stable budget for all county operations that provides essential services to the 1.8 million residents of the county.

"After years of challenging reductions, efficiencies and consolidations, this budget reflects outstanding service provision without major cuts to programs, staff or services," said Sims.

"The collaborative leadership of Budget Chair Larry Gossett made this 13-0 budget successful," Sims added.

"I would also like to thank County Council Chair Larry Phillips and the entire council. The people of King County are the winners with this budget."

But Sims noted, as he did when he presented the budget speech in October, that continued financial vigilance is needed or the county could find itself back in the position of having costs increasing while revenues are held constant by law.

Key actions that need to be pursued to ensure a continued stable financial picture include annexation and incorporation of urban unincorporated areas as well as health reform measures aimed at holding down escalating health care costs in the region. Both are being addressed through key Sims' initiatives.

"Today is a very positive step in that direction," said Sims. "In 2005, we must continue to work together to ensure the public is served while we do what is necessary to ensure continued financial stability for the county into the future."
