A recycling program designed and staffed by middle school students, grade schoolers who monitor the health of a lake, and teachers with a gift for making science lessons exciting learning experiences have all earned Earth Hero awards from King County in recent years. The county is now looking for nominees for the 2005 Earth Heroes at School awards.
"The future health of our precious planet depends on the lessons learned by our children today," said Executive Sims. "We as their teachers, and the current care-givers of our environment's natural systems, have a responsibility to teach the lessons well so that we can protect the region's natural resources and environment."
In its fifth year, the King County Earth Heroes at School program honors people in our schools who work tirelessly to protect our land, air and water resources. Nominations are submitted by colleagues and classmates who wish to recognize their on-going commitment to preserving the natural environment through educational efforts. Last year Sims recognized several outstanding teachers, students, staff, programs and schools doing wonderful work to protect the environment.
Nomination forms are available here (in .pdf) or by calling Linda Howard, at 206-296-4432. Nominations will be accepted until March 4, 2005. Award winners will be acknowledged at an Earth Heroes at School Award Ceremony in May 2005.
The Earth Heroes at School Program is part of a countywide Earth Legacy Initiative, which consists of a number of programs that protect and enhance King County's environment. Many of the exceptional people and outstanding projects in our schools that are making a difference can be models for similar projects in other schools, classrooms and communities.
