King County Executive Ron Sims today announced another important step towards completing the financing for the Juanita Woodlands Open Space Acquisition Project. The unique land transfer agreement brings together state and local governments with local citizens to protect and preserve a 36-acre parcel of woodland habitat.
Sims is seeking final County Council approval to enter into a grant agreement with the Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance (DCNA). The agreement authorizes King County to accept donations from the organization. The DCNA is actively seeking to secure additional funds to offset the costs of acquiring the property. This money will make possible other future open space acquisitions throughout the region.
"I support this cost-sharing initiative proposed by the Juanita community. It is a model partnership between government and citizens to preserve their natural environment and quality of life. I look forward to the successful preservation of the Juanita Woodlands in its entirety." Sims said.
"I commend the dedicated members of the Juanita community and the members of the Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance for their commitment over the past eight years."
In December 2003, the King County Council passed Ordinance 14817, authorizing the issuance of bonds to fund open space purchases, including the Juanita Woodlands. On Jan. 30, 2004, King County purchased the Juanita Woodlands for $7 million.
"We've worked a long time to ensure this project stays on course and remains part of our community. The DCNA remains committed to working to secure additional funds to complete the financing component of the transfer." said Patricia Anderson, Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance President.
The Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance has received contributions and pledges totaling $500,000, all of which it will donate to the county under the grant agreement. It also plans to work with the county to raise an additional $1.5 million, to ensure that the entire 36 acre parcel will be preserved permanently as woodland habitat.
