The King County 2005 Climate Change Conference is set for Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Qwest Field Event Center , from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, hosted by King County Executive Ron Sims, features keynote speaker Christine Todd Whitman, former head of the Environmental Protection Agency and New Jersey governor, and will include a number of nationally recognized global warming experts to discuss climate change impacts and potential adaptations of services to expected conditions. The event is sold out with more than 600 registered participants.
There will be a media check-in table beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday at the event center. Media packets will be available, including panelist information and climate change materials. King County Executive Ron Sims, Governor Whitman, guest speakers and panelists will be available for media interviews at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Representatives from a broad cross-section of local governments and state agencies, education, business, the tribes, agriculture, nonprofit organizations and communities are participating in the conference. In addition to Whitman's keynote address, conference highlights include:
Dr. Stephen Schneider , a world-renowned climate expert and lead author for international consensus documents on climate science;
Discussion and book signing with John Cox, author of Climate Crash: Abrupt Climate Change and What it Means for Our Future ( external link);
Breakout sessions led by local experts on the potential impact of climate change on natural and water resources, agriculture, coastal areas, fishing, forestry, hydropower, water supply and flooding/stormwater.
