Proclamation: Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
King County and the City of Seattle will co-host a celebration on May 24, 2006 to honor the contributions of Asian Pacific Americans.
WHEREAS, the fabric and foundation of Martin Luther King, Jr. County is enriched and strengthened by the diverse cultures and unique traditions of individuals and groups who comprise the beautiful mosaic of our neighborhoods, this region, and our entire nation; and
WHEREAS, immigrant, refugee and American-born community members of Asian Pacific Islander ancestry have contributed immensely to the growth and stability of Martin Luther King, Jr. County, deepening our American values of family, education, social justice and community, and further shaping the social and economic character of this county; and
WHEREAS, encompassing many histories, languages and journeys to help shape our collective American experience, Asian Pacific Americans have achieved exceptional success in all aspects of our society including business, politics, education, community service, media, arts and sciences. They have also brought their intellectual, economic and familial connections from Asia to benefit our region and nation while reinforcing our sense of a global community; and
WHEREAS, each year the month of May is celebrated throughout our nation as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month to honor the innumerable contributions and cultural heritage of Asian Pacific Islanders. Local communities hold a variety of celebrations featuring cultural, artistic, educational, and historical activities for everyone to experience and enjoy;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ron Sims, Executive of Martin Luther King, Jr. County, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2006 to be
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
in this great county. I encourage all residents to join me in honoring our community members of Asian Pacific Islander ancestry by participating in the many festivities planned in celebration of the beautiful and rich heritage of Asian Pacific Americans.
