Sims to chair King County Charitable Campaign

New option for employees: convert time into cash for those in need

King County employees will soon have a new way to help those in need.  Executive Ron Sims proposes to allow employees the option of converting vacation and compensatory time into cash donations for nonprofit organizations participating in the annual King County Employee Charitable Campaign. The 2006 campaign will run from October 2 – November 30.

Employee time can also be donated during the year in the event of a natural disaster such as last year’s Hurricane Katrina and the Asian Tsunami.   Previously, such donations were authorized by ordinance on a case-by-case basis. In 2005, employees donated more than 19,000 hours of accumulated vacation and compensatory time to help those in need – time with a net cash value of more than $610,000.

“We saw King County staff provide an outpouring of support for people around the country and the world last year,” said County Executive Ron Sims.  “I wanted to make the process of giving as easy as possible for them when the next calamity strikes and this ordinance does that.  It also honors King County’s longstanding commitment to charitable giving here at home.”

Sims will also be supporting the fall Employee Charitable Campaign by serving as an honorary co-chair of this year’s event. He will be joined by King County Department of Judicial Administration Director and Superior Court Clerk Barbara Miner.

The new ordinance creates administrative efficiencies while increasing opportunities for charitable giving.  It also replaces the special, event-specific ordinances required for time conversion donations in the past.

Employees will now be allowed to donate up to 40 hours annually to one of the non-profit organizations participating in the county’s Employee Charitable Campaign.  They can donate more than 40 hours if they have excess vacation or compensatory time beyond what can be carried forward into the next fiscal year. Visit our website for more information about the Employee Charitable Campaign.

The County Council is expected to act on the proposal later this month.
