King County provides information on hazard tree removal
As cleanup and repairs continue from last week's wind storm, King County Department of Development and Environmental Services (DDES) is emphasizing that emergency tree removal is exempt from permits and the Critical Areas Ordinance. Call the DDES hotline with questions about hazard tree removal, 206-296-6759.
Emergency tree removal is exempt from the need to obtain a permit, whether it is in a critical area or not. To qualify as an emergency; there must be a safety hazard to persons or structures and the danger must be imminent. Generally, an emergency exists where a tree has already begun to fail. If an emergency situation exists or if a tree has started to fall, it can be cut or otherwise dropped to the ground to eliminate the danger.
Any questions from the public regarding emergency or hazard tree removal should be directed to our general information line at 206-296-6759. If you have questions about downed trees near wetlands or steep slopes and the tree is not a safety hazard, please contact DDES at the number above.
Please note: DDES only has jurisdiction in the unincorporated area. For tree removal questions within a city limit, the pertinent city should be contacted.
