Proclamation: Community Development Week
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King Jr. County and its cities and towns work in partnership to provide suitable and sustainable communities for all residents; and
WHEREAS, in celebration of the Community Development Block Grant program the week of April 9-15, 2007 has been designated as National Community Development Week by the National Community Development Association; and
WHEREAS, the Community Development Block Grant program’s primary objective is to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment and expanding economic opportunities, primarily for low to moderate income households; and
WHEREAS, this county receives a direct allocation from the Community Development Block Grant program on behalf of most of its cities and towns, and works in partnership with those cities and towns to allocate Community Development Block Grant funds for activities that primarily benefit low to moderate-income households; and
WHEREAS, Community Development Block Grant funds support activities and services that include community centers, food banks, decent affordable housing, housing repair services, human services such as eviction prevention and emergency services, public infrastructure projects such as park and sidewalk improvements and water and sewer system improvements, and economic development activities; and
WHEREAS, in our region and in communities throughout the nation, 33 years of Community Development Block Grant program funding have formed a strong network of relationships among local governments, residents, non-profit organizations and businesses;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ron Sims, Executive of Martin Luther King Jr. County, do hereby proclaim April 9-15, 2007 to be
Community Development Week
in this great county. I encourage everyone to join me in this celebration by supporting this valuable program that has made a tremendous contribution to the viability of our communities. I encourage Congress and the Administration to recognize the outstanding work being done locally and nationally by the Community Development Block Grant program by supporting its increased funding in 2008.
