Inmate dies while in custody
An inmate in the custody of the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention died Oct. 8 at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle.
At 6:22 p.m. staff were alerted that the person, a 55-year-old female, was having a medical emergency. Staff responded at once and 911 was called at 6:23 p.m. CPR was started immediately, but revival attempts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at 7:02 p.m.
The inmate had been booked into the jail on Sept. 6.
Due to federal privacy laws, information about the inmate's medical condition cannot be released. The King County Medical Examiner will release cause and manner of death, as well as identity of the individual as part of its standard protocol. State law requires that the King County Medical Examiner conduct an autopsy on all in-custody deaths.
As part of the standard review process for jail deaths, the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention will be working with Public Health - Seattle & King County to conduct an investigation. The Seattle Police Department will also conduct an independent investigation.
