MLK logo wins national award

King County's new logo depicting an original image of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded first place nationally with a Savvy Award from 3CMA (City, County Communications and Marketing Association), the nation's leading organization for improving local government communication with constituents.

King County unveiled the new logo that reflects its namesake, The Rev. Dr. King, in March of 2007 after a year-long process involving citizens, stakeholders, employees and all branches of county government.

Judges of the entries in the category of Marketing Plans and ToolSavvy Award—Branding/New Logo wrote the following comment: "Excellent participatory process to select new logo that successfully reflects change in the county's namesake. Kudos for your plan to phase in the logo change as existing supplies and equipment are exhausted (positive message of conservation!) and for your contribution to keeping alive the spirit and accomplishments of Dr. King."

County Council Chairman Larry Gossett led the effort to change the logo from a crown to the image of Dr. King.

"This award is the culmination of a year-long effort to educate and involve the people of King County in the creation of our new logo," said Council Chair Larry Gossett, sponsor of the ordinance creating the new logo. "We are honored that 3CMA has recognized our symbol—our daily visual reminder of Dr. King. A reminder of who he was, what he stood for and what we want the county we live in to strive to achieve."

"We can be doubly proud of our logo that reflects the values of our community and is now cited as the best in a national competition," said King County Executive Ron Sims. "I extend congratulations and thanks to the designer Tony Gable Design Group, to Chairman Gossett and to all the elected leaders, community groups, county employees and citizens who took part in this collaborative effort."
