King County issues emergency proclamation
Proclamation opens door for quick response and recovery
King County Executive Ron Sims has issued an emergency proclamation at 12:30 p.m. today as a result of severe weather and flooding in King County over the last several days. This proclamation allows county departments to respond even more quickly to protect property, waiving normal contracting procedures and budgetary limits.
“This proclamation allows for expedited repairs to our damaged infrastructure caused by the torrential rains and wind,” said King County Executive Ron Sims. “Our goal is to get back to one hundred percent as soon as possible.”
Damage assessment begins
King County is requesting that residents of geographic King County who suffered wind and/or flood-related losses to their primary home from the morning of December 2nd onward report their damages and estimated personal property losses.
The King County Office of Emergency Management has established a Citizen Damage Reporting web site for all residents of geographic King County to report their losses. Residents should report disaster damage online at www.kingcounty.gov/prepare beginning today until further notice. Residents are encouraged to report online, however a toll-free hotline number will be available starting Wednesday for residents who cannot report damages online.
This information is being collected in order to assist the Washington State Emergency Management Division in requesting federal assistance because of this disaster. It may be several weeks before a determination is made by officials as to what disaster relief programs may be available. This reporting of damages is not a guarantee that residents will receive assistance of any kind. Should a federal declaration be announced for this weather event, additional information will be provided on how property owners are to file claims with FEMA.
Residents reporting damages should be prepared to provide the following information:
- the name and address of affected property
- a description of damage
- a personal estimate of uninsured losses, and
- estimates of the fair market value of damaged homes or businesses.
**Note: Detached garages and storage buildings, secondary homes and recreational homes are not to be reported.
Updated information on King County’s ongoing response can be found at the King County home page, www.kingcounty.gov, and at the Regional Public Information Network, www.RPIN.org.
