Credit card fraud

"Have you or a close friend or family member been the victim of credit card fraud?"

Following are samples of comments received from this week's poll; to ensure people's privacy the comments have been posted anonymously.

"I have not had a problem with my credit card, but I have had about 4 instances of fraud on my Visa Check card. Visa and Mastercard do not give the same protection to the debit card as their credit card even though they advertise the debit card as being safe. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed."

"My wallet was stolen this summer, and the resulting fraud was hellish. I am not so stupid as to carry my Social Security card in my wallet. But guess what. My health insurance company finds it necessary to use my SS # as my patient id #. D'oh! I wish Congress would pass a law mandating that insurance companies not be allowed to use SS #s for patient id #s."

"Yes, out of six children and both parents six have suffered from credit card fraud. If you include a spouse that charges up your personal credit card and signs your name (for which you have no proof) with full intentions of leaving afterward, then we'll make it seven."

"Now that I have actually read the "background info" I am glad to see the protections being formulated. So far, I have refused to use my credit card online for any purpose for fear of fraud. I might be willing to do so in the future if I could be sure that it wouldn't lead to credit fraud disaster."

"So far, thank God, I have not had a problem, but I am very careful: I have only one "major" credit card and maybe two retail store cards, and I carry only when I know I am going to use them. On the backs of the retail store credit cards, instead of a signature I wrote "check I.D." My bank debit card does not have a visa logo on it so it can't be used like a credit card. I shred all credit card statements and I cut old cards into pieces before discarding. I pay my bills at the bank/store so no payment checks sit in the mail box. I shred all credit card offers that come in the mail (don't ever just toss them out in one piece!)"
