What is Metadata ?

Simply put, metadata are data about data. In reference to GIS data, it means information about the quality, condition, and history of a dataset - how it was created, by whom and for what purpose, its geographic extent, and information about the values in its attribute table(s). The Federal Geographic Data Committee publishes standards for metadata (EXTERNAL LINK).

The metadata model used by the KCGIS has been developed:

  • to insure a correlation between documentation and data available from the KCGIS Spatial Data Warehouse;
  • as a basis for the delivery of information access applications - see for example, the Map Portal;
  • as a means for managing the KCGIS Spatial Data Warehouse to provide a basis for multiple output formats or documentation queries.

The primary output format is the KCGIS Spatial Data Catalog.

What is a GIS data projection?

GIS data projections are the method that cartographers use to represent our 3 dimensional world on a 2 dimensional flat map. There are many different projections to choose from, because each one tends to distort shape, area, direction, or distances in different ways and by different amounts. Which one you use depends on your purpose. For a more detailed discussion of the projections in general, see the Wikipedia article: Map Projections (EXTERNAL LINK).

I tried to start ArcMap (or ArcCatalog), and I got a license error.

Chances are good that you're not pointed to the correct license manager.

  1. Go to Start:Programs:ArcGIS:Desktop Administrator.

  2. Choose License Manager. You'll see which license manager you're pointed at.

  3. If necessary, click the Change button to point to a different one. Your LAN administrator or GIS support person should be able to tell you where to connect.

How do I get rid of that annoying "Expired License" message?

1. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the "utilities" directory in your ArcGIS install location. On Windows machines, this is usually:
     C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Utilities

2. Double-click the file "AdvancedArcMapSettings.exe"

3. Go to the "Miscellaneous" tab and look for the check box in the License Timeout section. Uncheck this checkbox.

How can I get imagery in MrSID format to plot correctly instead of printing out black squares?

Some King County imagery is available in the convenient MrSID format, but many users report difficulties getting imagery in this format to print out correctly. If you are having trouble with this, you may have an outdated MrSID driver file or your environment variables may be set incorrectly. For more information, consult this document (EXTERNAL LINK) from the ESRI Online Support Center website.

Why does it take so long for my plot to come out when I use MrSID imagery?

MrSID imagery can not be printed as is by the plotter. First it has to uncompress the file, which can greatly increase plotting times. The only solution is to use image catalogs instead of MrSID imagery if short plotting time is a necessity.

Why am I getting a "Segmentation Violation" error when I use KC Parcel Tools?

The KC Parcel Tools (MS Word doc) extension for ArcView is only able to retrieve information on 1000 parcels or less at one time. If you have selected greater than 1000 parcels and attempt to retrieve information on them, you will get the "Segmentation Violation" error message. For tips on how to get around this limitation see the DNRP GIS Tech Tip: KC Parcel Tools Tip.

How can I fix my corrupted ArcView project?

Corruption of ArcView projects can happen for a number of reasons. You may be able to rescue that important project by following some of the suggestions in this document (EXTERNAL LINK) from the ESRI Online Support Center website.
