Environment and Animals: The Issues

Our natural surroundings are precious, irreplaceable, and must be protected. By giving to nonprofits that work to protect animals and environment through the King County Employee Giving Program, you can do your part to preserve these resources in Washington, the United States, and even worldwide.

Did you know?

  • 63,000 square miles of rainforests are being destroyed each year. Every day 50 to 100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitat and human influences destroy them. By supporting organizations like the Rainforest Alliance, you can provide funding for protecting this precious resource.
  • Energy saved from one recycled aluminum can will operate a TV set for 3 hours, and is the equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline. By supporting organizations like the Northwest Energy Coalition, you can fund education programs in schools to teach kids about recycling, and fund campaigns for more efficient energy use among local businesses.
  • In 2000, in Washington State alone, approximately 147,000 cats and dogs ended up in shelters, almost 65,000 of whom were euthanized. By donating to organizations like PAWS, you can help offset the cost of housing stay animals in no-kill shelters.
  • By turning down your central heating thermostat one degree, fuel consumption is cut by as much as 10%. Insulating your attic reduces the amount of energy loss in most houses by up to 20%. By supporting organizations like the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, you can fund research on how to make our homes and workplaces more energy efficient.
  • Of the 31 species studied on the Endangered Species List, 19 have been recently de-listed after years of vigilant protection, or are likely to be de-listed within the next 25 years. By donating to organizations like Defenders of Wildlife, you can help continue this important work
