Training & technical assistance for homeless programs

Health Care for the Homeless Network Shelter Health & Safety Program

Health Care for the Homeless Network's public health nurses offer technical assistance and consultation to shelters, day centers, transitional housing programs, and other homeless-serving programs in King County. To request training or technical assistance services, contact Health Care for the Homeless Network at 206-296-5091.

Communicable disease training topics include:

  • Hepatitis A, B, and C
  • Lice & scabies control
  • Tuberculosis
  • Cold & flu season
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Universal precautions
  • Handwashing
  • Where to refer clients for health care
  • Foodborne Illness

Technical assistance:

  • Consultations for new and existing homeless programs, including overnight shelters hosted at religious or community facilities
  • Assistance with health screening questions on shelter intake tools
  • Health and safety posters and pamphlets for homeless agencies
  • Help with developing health and safety policies and procedures
  • Best practice guidelines for shelters/drop-in centers (health and safety)
  • Tuberculosis prevention and control guidelines

Health education for shelter and day center guests:

Tailored classes for people experiencing homelessness, such as:

  • Health and hygiene
  • Men's health issues
  • Women's health issues
  • Chronic diseases
  • Youth health issues
  • Communicable disease topics
