Evidence-based Public Health Links -- Guidelines
Evidence-based public health is defined as “a public health endeavor in which there is an informed, explicit, and judicious use of evidence that has been derived from any of a variety of science and social science research and evaluation methods (Sackett et al, 1996).” Evidence based public health practice is what we strive for.
- Guide to Clinical Preventive Services
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is an independent panel of primary care and prevention experts. They have systematically reviewed the evidence of effectiveness for a number of clinical preventive services. The website lists recommendations regarding screening tests, counseling, immunizations, and preventive medications for cancer, infectious diseases, and pediatric conditions, among several others. Health educators and planners will find this link particularly useful.
- National Guideline Clearinghouse
An initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) is a public resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. The NGC includes guidelines regarding both clinical and public health related topics. Of particular interest to public health practitioners are the documents related to bioterrorism, HIV, infectious disease, and violence prevention. Guideline results are available in a number of formats. Click on “Frequent Searches”) to view a list of stored searches that relate to Health People 2010, browse the collection, or run your own search. NGC welcomes feedback regarding the types of public health searches you would like to see on their “Frequent Searches” list. Be sure to check out NGC’s sister sites: National Quality Measures Clearinghouse and Quality Tools.
