Show Me the Money: Funding Resources Online

Every year public health departments receive millions of dollars in grants from a wide range of government and private sources, including NIH, HHS, EPA, and CDC. Public health programs and initiatives depend on grants for much of their funding, and grant seeking and writing skills are essential to the public health practitioner. Fortunately, there are several online resources for both the grant seeker and the grant writer.

  • Community of Science: Funding Opportunities
Available only to UW Affiliates, via the HealthLinks website, COS’s comprehensive funding database holds over 22,000 records, representing over 400,000 funding opportunities totaling over $33 billion. Freedom Funds, developed by COS following the events of September 11th, focuses on grants that address needs related to the crisis. To access COS, users must first log on using their UW NetID.  If you need assistance, contact me at the email address listed below.

  • Foundation Center
The Foundation Center specializes in private philanthropy. While several of the resources on their website are free, searching the foundation directory is restricted to subscribers (UW affiliates included). Fortunately, the Seattle Public Library provides onsite access to the Foundation Center Search CD ROM, an interactive and searchable database for grant seekers and fund raisers covering over 78,500 U.S.-based foundations, etc. To use the CD ROM, please call the Seattle Public Library at 206-386-4636 to make a reservation.

  • FundSource
FundSource allows behavioral and social scientists, and those in related fields, to find research funding. This free resource allows the grant seeker to search by organization, topic, or discipline.

  • Grants.gov
Grants.gov a portal to over 1000 grant programs offered by all Federal grant-making agencies. It allows users to find and apply for more than $400 billion in Federal grants.  You can also submit federal grants electronically through Grants.gov.

  • Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce: Grants & Funding
Partners is a collaboration of U.S. government agencies, public health organizations and health sciences libraries whose mission is to help the public health workforce find and use information effectively to improve and protect the public's health. Their Grants & Funding webpage list a range of public health oriented opportunities for fellowships, grants and other awards.

May your grant writing be gifted and your grant seeking fruitful!
