King County Board of Health meeting on September 16, 2005

KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON - The King County Board of Health will hold its next meeting on Friday, September 16, 2005, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The meeting will be held at:

9. Public Health Operational Master Plan (PH OMP) Consultant Selection Update.
Toni Rezab, Senior Policy Analyst, King County Office of Management and Budget and Carrie Cihak, Senior Legislative Project Lead, King County Council will update the Board on the status of the selection process for the PH OMP consultant.

10. Presentation of core indicators
David Solet, PhD, Assistant Chief, Epidemiology, Planning and Evaluation Unit, Public Health – Seattle & King County, will present data collected on core health indicators which depict how King County compares to other major metropolitan areas. This report meets the following Standard for Public Health Assessment:

“AS2.2L Assessment data is provided to community groups and representatives of the broader community for review and identification of emerging issues that may require investigation.”

Dr. Solet will also present the findings related to the increase in the level of King County’s uninsured, as published in the September 2005 Public Health Data Watch entitled “The Uninsured in King County 1995 – 2004.”

11. Panel presentation on the increase in the medically uninsured
The panel will present the health policy and health systems issues for uninsured citizens of King County and their access to health care. The panel includes: Johnese Spisso, R.N., M.P.A., Chief Operating Officer, Harborview Medical Center, who will discuss the challenges for Harborview Medical Center’s Emergency Room; The Governor's Health Policy Advisor and Director, Access to Health Insurance Project who will provide a state/federal policy perspective; Charissa Fontinos, M.D., Medical Director, Public Health – Seattle & King County and Clinical Associate Professor in Family Medicine, University of Washington, who will provide a perspective from public health/community health services; and Rosemary Aragon, M.P.A., Executive Director, Pacific Hospital Preservation and Development Authority, who will provide information about the issues of the provision of specialty referral services. The panel will be moderated by Susan Johnson, Manager, Health Action Plan, Public Health – Seattle & King County.

12. Presentation of recommendations to the Obesity Panel
This panel will present information and a draft resolution for consideration on obesity and overweight prevention activities and policies in King County. The draft resolution will be presented in September and considered for a vote by the Board at the next meeting on October 21, 2005.

The panel includes: Barbara Bruemmer, Center for Public Health Nutrition, University of Washington; Willie Austin, Co-Founder, Austin Foundation; Kirsten Wysen, Policy Analyst, Public Health-Seattle & King County; Matías Valenzuela, Public Education Coordinator, Public Health-Seattle & King County; and Barbara Wright, Assistant Division Director, Environmental Health Services, Public Health-Seattle & King County. The panel will describe activities and policies in the areas of Food and Nutrition, Physical Activity, Design for Active Living, and Communications. The work is based on recommendations arising out of the first two King County Overweight Initiative forums held at the Shoreline Conference Center in September 2004 and May 2005. Please note that you are invited to attend the third King County Overweight Initiative forum to be held at the Tukwila Community Center from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2005.
