King County Board of Health Meeting on October 20, 2006

KING COUNTY, WA - The King County Board of Health will hold its next meeting on Friday, October 20, 2006, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the following location:

King County Council Chambers
10th Floor, King County Courthouse
516 Third Avenue, Seattle

9. Public Health Funding (Action Item)
Kathy Uhlorn, Board Administrator, joined by Representative Shay Schaul-Berke, Washington State Legislature and Tom Bristow, Government Relations Consultant, will brief the Board on the findings, conclusions, and recommendations from the 4410 Joint Select Committee on Public Health Funding. The Joint Select Committee evaluated the current status of Washington’s public health system and studied alternative financing strategies for the public health system. The attached Staff Report is based on drafts of the 4410 Committee’s findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Final versions will be forwarded to Boardmembers when available.

10. Overweight Prevention Initiative
A panel (including Carolyn Kramer, Seattle Public Schools; Marilyn Guthrie, Washington Mutual; Willie Austin, Austin Foundation; Roberta Lewandowski, retired Planning Director, City of Redmond; and Laura Streichert, University of Washington) will report on the King County Overweight Prevention Initiative progress. Resolution #05-08, (adopted in October, 2005) directed the King County Overweight Prevention Initiative to report progress back to the Board after one year. Please review the attached “King County Board of Health Action Items for Obesity Prevention” for Boardmember discussion and action.
11. Domestic Violence Awareness Month (Action Item)
Carrie S. Cihak, Senior Principal Legislative Analyst, King County Council and Dr. Robert Thompson, Director Emeritus, Department of Preventive Care and Senior Investigator, Center for Health Studies, Group Health Cooperative, will brief the Board on Resolution #06-04 supporting universal screening of intimate partner violence by health practitioners, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Board will then vote on this Resolution.

12. Amendment to the King County Board of Health Operating Rules (Action Item)
Kathy Uhlorn, Board Administrator, will briefly review Motion #06-05 to amend the Board of Health Operating Rules. This Motion changes the time of the Board meetings to 1:30 pm on the third Thursday of each month, establishes King County Council chambers as the regular meeting location, and allows the Chair to cancel meetings and schedule alternative dates in the case of legal holidays. Boardmembers will then vote on this Motion.
