School based sealant program

Currently, Public Health's school based sealant program delivers services in 58 elementary schools throughout King County. Schools are identified on the basis of the percentage of students enrolled in the Free/Reduced Lunch program. Using portable equipment, a complete dental operatory is set up at a school. Children are examined and then sealants are placed on permanent molars. A dental sealant is a plastic substance that is painted in the pits and grooves of molars to protect teeth from decay. The program is offered to 2nd grade students because they have newly erupted first permanent molars.

Sealants and fluorides are the most effective treatments for preventing decay.

Oral health education

The Tooth Tutor is a K-6 curriculum developed by the Department of Health and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Each grade level has separate learning goals and objectives, and the curriculum includes additional materials such as videos, posters, books and models. Public Health supports the use of this curriculum by supplying toothbrushes for students.

Assessment training

Oral health assessment training is offered to school nurses so they can identify oral health problems and assist students receive dental care. The training covers identification of cavities, abscesses, emergency procedures, eruption patterns, and other oral health information.
