On June 7 2003, Public health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the states of Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana reported the first outbreak of human infections with a monkeypox-like virus in the Western Hemisphere. All cases had been in contact with ill prairie dogs.
At this time, no cases of monkeypox in humans or animals have been reported locally.
